Kevin Rudd deleted comments about Former President Donald Trump after his election win, clarifying they didn’t reflect the Australian government’s stance.

Rudd had called Trump “the most destructive president in history” in 2020, before deleting the comments after the election.

The statement said Rudd removed his past comments out of respect for the U.S. presidency following Trump’s election win.

Rudd removed the comments to prevent them from being seen as reflecting his views as Ambassador or those of the Australian Government.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed confidence in Australia’s alliance with the U.S., including the AUKUS deal for nuclear-powered submarines.

Wong stated she met with Mike Pompeo during the campaign and emphasized bipartisan support for the AUKUS deal.

Wong emphasized that the U.S. is Australia’s key strategic partner, sharing clear objectives for a stable, peaceful region, with bipartisan support for AUKUS.

In a March British TV interview, Trump called Rudd “not the brightest bulb” and “nasty” when asked about his comments.

Trump remarked, “He won’t be there long if that’s the case,” referring to Rudd, following criticism of the Australian ambassador.

Wong expressed her support for Rudd’s ability to work effectively with a Republican administration.

Rudd served as the chief executive of the Asia Society think tank in New York until 2023, when he became ambassador.
